Whoever wishes to keep a secret must hide the fact that he possesses one.
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
When I was processing this image I felt sad for these two trees – so near, but just out of each other’s reach. I imagined their heartache each Autumn as the leaves from one tree sweep through the branches of the other, while still they can not embrace.
But then one evening as I was falling asleep, it occurred to me that I was not seeing the whole reality. That below the surface, deep under the snow and the soil, these two trees are likely entwined in a deep lifelong embrace, quite happily in each others arms.
They very nearly managed to keep their secret from me.
